I would write to you about my new Iphone, but I am too busy learning everything I can about it.

I just finished watching tv & walked back to our office to see what Chuck was up to. I found him walking around staring at his new phone. He explained, "I'm walking through my childhood neighborhood." I suspect you & Chuck will both be geeking for quite a while to come.

p.s. now Chuck is scanning bar codes from random objects so his phone can tell him where to buy them for less money. Little does his phone know...we already own these items.
Bill wrote:
That is very funny. I wish I could scan the bar codes around my house.

I'm not the least bit jealous. I just thought you'd like to know that you suck, Bill.

I'm am glad you're not jealous, Paco. I'd tell you more about how much I love the phone but I am still too busy geeking.

Chuck can scan barcodes???? My life is OVER!!!

Has anyone else noticed how both the seismic economy and the climactic last two weeks of the most historic presidential campaign in our memory have been totally eclipsed by the advent of a couple new new tech-toys?
Katie wrote:
Well, we have to have priorities.
Btw - Chuck's phone can also listen to a song and then tell him where to buy it. Chuck's phone wins.

You left out a key part-- it tells you what song it is and where to buy it. Also the artist, album, link to the artist's myspace page.
I'm pretty sure that app--Shazam--is also available for the iPhone.

Well I guess Chuck's phone isn't so special afterall.
Chuck wrote:
Ah, that's better.
Chuck wrote:
No, it's not better...Bill, can you add in the close italics tag that I left out above? Sorry about that.
Bill wrote:
I put it on. I do have shazam... but when do I ever listen to music that is not coming from my iphone? I mostly listen to NPR talk and pandora. It is a cool feature, I am just not enough of an audiophile to be a good candidate for it.

Ok, there is apparently a feng shuei balance issue in the universe of geekdom. Today at about 2:00 p.m. my IPhone slowed to a crawl and stopped. I can only assume that our family reached the critical mass of geekiness and the universe killed my IPhone in self defense. No attempts to revive it were successful. Even the normally brilliant Apple tech people could not bring it back to life.
Now it gets ugly. One cannot get their IPhone exchanged or serviced at the AT&T Store, only at an Apple Store. The nearest one is in Fresno, 100 miles away. Doing it by mail involves IPhonelessness for more than ten days!
Is there a digital methadon clinic anywhere? Probably Fresno, 100 miles away.

Harsh, we have both an AT&T store and an Apple store next door to each other in our mall. That said, it may be the only one in Iowa. I know you can't get your phone going, but tell me, what apps do you remember liking? I am still in the quest for good apps.
Honestly, if they could just exchange it in person, I would gladly drive 100 miles and back for my iphone.

I suspect your iPhone dying is a sign that you ought to upgrade to the Google phone.

Join John McCain using the Googles? I don't think so.
I am torn between driving to Fresno and dropping way back to a Windows based Treo 700 for ten days. Since gas has dropped to $2.95 a gallon, the drive looks possible. I am off tomorrow, after all.
As to apps, there is a great poll tracker from Slate for 99 cents, though that was the last app I added before my IPhone crashed and died. I also like Crash Bandicoote for 5 bucks. There is also a nice Episcopal prayerbook called IBCP and a Hebrew blessing guide called Iblessing. GTS World Racing may be the best first-person racing game. Of course EReader is my most used App. I carry a dozen books in my IPhone including my NIV Study Bible. When you sync the IPhone to a laptop, it saves your last read page on both machines. Solitaire Top Three is nice when people are late for appointments. "Where to?" is nice accompaniment to the IPhone GPS. What I find amazing is the low prices for Apps.

Thanks for the app tips. I am checking those out.

Life looks better than it did yesterday. I decided that it was bad stewardship to drive to Fresno to exchange my IPhone, so I called 1 (800) Myiphon to arrange doing a mail-in for repairs. The tech I talked with THIS time asked if I wanted to do the immediate replacement instead for $29.00.
Hmmm... drive 200 miles, go 10+ days IPhone-less, or pay $29 to get a new IPhone by Monday. Let's see... YES! Here is my credit card number!

Definitely an improvement.

Ahh, Monday morning the DHL Van pulled up to the church and all was good with the universe once again. One signature, rip off the packing tape, retrieve the shiny new IPhone from its carefully packed nest, five minutes to sync with my MacBook and restore all data; shalom once again reigns in geekdom.

It is easy for me to see how my Iphone could become a seemless part of my brain. I would rather not have to do without it. I am glad they got yours back so quickly.

You never appreciate your IPhone more than when you have been without it for four whole days! Part of the sense of loss was using a Treo 750 with Windows Mobile as a replacement.
My condolences to anyone doomed to using Win. Mobile on their PDA. Palm OS and IPhone OS are both exponentially ahead of it. IPhone OS is the only model better than Palm, IMHO, and it blows by it.
